Profile...
Per Tengstrand
solo piano
Laureate of the Paris
International Long-Thibaud competition in 1995, in '96-'97, Per
Tengstrand entered two other major competitions, the Geneva CIEM
competition and the Cleveland International Piano Competition,
winning both.
A number of prestigious
engagements followed, including a critically acclaimed New York
debut recital at Alice Tully Hall and concerts worldwide.
While critics are
astonished by this young Swedish pianist, their opinions of what
makes him special are divided: some are attracted by his
intelligence and profundity, others remark on his almost animal
stage presence and instincts in music-making, as well as a
Horowitz-like electricity.
Per Tengstrand began
playing piano at age six. He received his first lessons from his
mother and made his first public appearance when he was seven
years old. His actual debut took place in 1981, when he played
the Mozart Piano Concerto K 467 with the Helsingborg Symphony
Orchestra.
The critics wrote about
a mischievous twelve year old boy with red hair and with a
seemingly effortless technique and a maturity that makes you
wonder what will become of him in the decade to come.
After a solid education
in Geneva, Paris and Malmö where his teachers included Dominique
Weber, Romuald Sztern, Dominique Merlet and Hans Palson, Per has
acquired a far-reaching repertoire from Bach to contemporary
pieces, and he is the dedicatee of a number of piano works.
Per Tengstrand has
performed as soloist with conductors such as Neeme Jarvi, Yevgeny Svetlanov, Manfred Honeck and Leon
Fleisher, and has been invited
to music festivals such as the Kuhmo Festival, Kitakiyshu
Festival and Pianofest Long Island, New York. His latest CD
recording, on the American label Azica, included music by Grieg,
Liszt and Chopin.
