The Terwilliger-Cooperstock Duo

Winners of the prestigious United States Infomation Agency's Artistic Ambassador Auditions, violinist William Terwilliger and pianist Andrew Cooperstock have performed extensively across the United States and abroad. Under the auspices of USIA they made a six-week, thirty-engagement tour of Latin America, where, in addition to programming the standard repertoire, they featured works by American composers such as Aaron Copland, Robert Starer, and Paul Schoenfield. In 1997 they made a 9-week tour of Europe, performing in recital and with orchestra and presenting master classes in France, Scotland, England, Sweden, and Latvia. Other recent engagements include performances as convention artists at national meetings of the National Federation of Music Clubs and of Mu Phi Epsilon, and numerous chamber music recitals at North Carolina's Brevard Music Center, where the duo has been in residence since 1991.

With a special interest in the works of Aaron Copland, the Duo has performed the composer's complete works for violin and piano in numerous venues across the U. S. and abroad, including centennial recitals at New York's Merkin Hall and London's Wigmore Hall. Of a recent performance of Copland, French critic Jacques Polvorinos stated, "the violinist played with ease the most perilous passages, but whoever says sonata, says collaboration, and it was total. The two artists knew perfectly how to master the composer's musical intentions without getting lost in the technique·The duo will soon release a disc devoted to the complete violin and piano works of Aaron Copland·Let's wager that this disc will be a triumph."

William Terwilliger received his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Zvi Zeitlin and Donald Weilerstein. Formerly, he was first violinist of the acclaimed Augustine String Quartet, which, under the direction of such world-class quartets as the Cleveland, the Juilliard, the Tokyo, and the Guarneri, traveled extensively throughout North America. In 1994 Mr. Terwilliger was invited as a United States Information Agency Cultural Specialist to judge the National String Competition of Bolivia, to present recitals and master classes in that country, and to perform several concerts as soloist with the Orquesta Nacional. Dr. Terwilliger has served as professor of violin and viola at The University of Toledo, violinist with the Toledo Trio, and conductor of the University of Toledo Orchestra. He is presently professor of violin and chamber music at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Andrew Cooperstock holds degrees from Juilliard, Peabody, and the University of Cincinnati, where he studied with Abbey Simon, Walter Hautzig, and David Bar-Illan, as well as with collaborative pianist Samuel Sanders. Winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artists Competition, he has performed in most of the fifty states. Recent engagments have included performances for the Lincoln Center Mozart Bicentennial Tribute, a recital at the United Nations, and concerto appearances with such orchestras as the Chautauqua Symphony, theBrevard Music Center Orchestra, and New York's Jupiter Symphony. A sought-after juror, he has participated on juries of the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artists Competition, the New Orleans International Competition, the Louise D. MacMahon International Competition, and the Concert Artists Guild Competition. Formerly a faculty member of the University of Oklahoma School of Music, Dr. Cooperstock is currently professor of piano at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
